Huge installation specially designed by American artists Mike and Doug Starn in the spaces of MACRO Testaccio, on the occasion of the special edition 2012 celebrating 50 years of Enel. The work of art is a large sculpture-architecture consists of about 8,000 bamboo poles.
The Work of Art “Big Bambú” is a very particular work of contemporary art, a kind of architecture that is partially walkable, which as a living organism, relates to the presence of the visitor inside it.
The Work of Art is a 33 meters high structure, entirely made of bamboo canes of various dimensions, tied and fixed together with appropriate ropes, which includes walking paths for visitors, up to a maximum of 20 meters by a double helix staircase and a spiral staircase.
In the inner part, the structure also includes 2 interaction areas - at 14-16 meters ( maximum capacity 10 persons each) from the ground and a kind of 5 meters high mini-auditorium, which allows visitors (maximum capacity 20 persons) to experience the space and stay for a while.
Visitors must respect very carefully all the instructions and prescriptions of the Regulations and all the others provided by the authorized staff.
During access into the Work of Art, Visitors must act with the greatest caution for the safety of their persons and the minors and/or disabled people with them, whilst behaving with a correct and respectful manner, paying special attention to not cause damage to any other visitors.
Visitors must wear appropriate shoes, better if closed and rubber soled.
Considering that the walkable part of the Work of Art may have some rough surfaces due to its natural shape and natural junctures of bamboo canes, Visitors are kindly requested to be particularly careful and to be aware of the surroundings. Any loose items should be secured and pockets should be zippered so objects cannot fall to the ground because any falling object could potentially injure.
The access to the Work of Art is strictly forbidden in one (or more) of the following cases:
- in case of rain, strong wind, snow and/or other bad weather conditions; access is at the discretion of authorized staff, even in the best conditions; likewise, when the supports in elevation shall be in risk of slip (e.g.: wet steps);
- people under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other psychotropic substances;
- people who don’t sign and return the release form to the box office;
- people without the identification stamp for visitors;
- people without appropriate shoes (e.g.: high heels, bare feet, flip flops, etc.);
- people carrying weapons or dangerous objects;
- people whose behavior is violent, disrespectful or unseemly;
- people not able to move independently or in need of help (e.g.: crutches, wheelchair, etc.) and people suffering from serious visual deficiency if not accompanied by a guide dog.
Smoking is strictly forbidden inside the Work of Art.
It is also strictly forbidden to throw objects from the Work of Art.
Visitors are kindly requested not to access the higher areas of the Work of Art in one (ore more) of the following cases:
- People suffering from panic attacks, epileptic fits, problems of balance in deambulation, breathing problems, tachycardia, vertigo, feeling sick;
- Pregnant women;
- People of more than 180 kg. of weight;
- People suffering from pathologies that may cause danger of any kind to other visitors.
Visitors are allowed to take pictures and audiovisual film only as a personal souvenir.
The transgressors of the regulations won’t be allowed to stay in the Work of art.
THE MUSEUM AND THE PROMOTERS DENY ANY LIABILITY FOR ANY KIND OF DAMAGES TO PEOPLE AND/OR THINGS COMING FROM NEGLIGENT AND/OR CARELESS BEHAVIOURS OF THE VISITORS.
